Over the years, she has tended to go into this sort of trance or faraway place in her mind. She kind of goes through the motions of life, but some days she is completely gone. She never wants to talk about it, but I have always sensed that it was important. Not just in the way she goes, but how it affects her afterward.
For days she will be in the dumps or even over-involved in a new adventure or work. Whatever can distract her the most. I remember a time when she switched all our rooms and redecorated them. For the amount of paint and fabric used, it was pure chaos. Kind of like I am sure her mind was at that time. At least I have some of my original stuff back.
Never noticed her eyes change like that before. They were a deep black. She shook her head, giving me that look to not say anything when I was about to comment. The black receded to her natural brown with gold flecks.

She settles against a nearby tree. Her eyes dart around, unseeing yet seeing. I have seen this look before in her father’s eyes when his gift surfaces. He always seems alone and far away. The connection to souls takes him to their plane of existence, close to death, or, I guess, a nicer way to say this is ‘eternal rest.’
